Dzogpachenpo
The Philosopher and the Physician’s Great Connection

Dr. nida Chenagtsang and Professor Robert Robert Thurman

Join Professor Robert Thurman and Dr. Nida Chenagtsang for an engaged discussion on the practice of Dzogchen (Ati Yoga) as taught by the yogi-philosopher Je Tsongkhapa (1357–1419) and the yogi-physician, Yuthok Yönten Gönpo (1126–1202).

This is a rare topic that illustrates our two teachers’ support of non-sectarian and open dialogue on important aspects of Tibetan meditation, medicine, and culture.

Hailed by the New York Times as the leading American expert on Tibetan Buddhism, Robert Thurman is a professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies in the Department of Religion at Columbia University.  He is President of Tibet House US, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Tibetan civilization, and President the American Institute of Buddhist Studies, which is dedicated to the translation of the Tengyur, an important part of the Tibetan canon.

The first American to have been ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist monk and a personal friend of His Holiness the Dalai Lama for nearly 50 years, Professor Thurman is a dedicated advocate and spokesperson for Tibet. Professor Thurman also translates important Tibetan and Sanskrit philosophical writings, and lectures and writes on Buddhism, particularly Tibetan Buddhism; Asian history, particularly the history of the monastic institution in Asian civilization; and critical philosophy, with a focus on the dialogue between the material and inner sciences of the world’s religious traditions.

Dr. Nida Chenagtsang is a traditional Tibetan physician and world-renowned teacher of Tibetan Medicine (Sowa Rigpa), Buddhism, and yogic practices.

Born in Amdo, in Northeastern Tibet, Dr. Nida completed his medical studies in Lhasa, while training in all lineages of Vajrayana Buddhism, especially in the Longchen Nyingthig, Dudjom Tersar, and Yuthok Nyingthig, the unique spiritual tradition of Tibetan Medicine.

A well-known poet in his youth, Dr. Nida later published many articles and books and his extensive research and revival of little-known ancient Tibetan healing methods has gained him high acclaim in both East and West.

In addition to his work as a physician, he trains students in Sowa Rigpa and the Yuthok Nyingthig tradition in over forty countries worldwide. He is the founder and medical director of Sowa Rigpa Institute: School of Traditional Tibetan Medicine and Sorig Khang International.
